How to Prepare for a Plasterer

Plastering is an essential step in creating smooth, beautiful walls and ceilings — but proper preparation is just as important as the plastering itself. If you’re planning to have a room plastered, here’s how to get it ready to ensure the best results and save time for your plasterer.

Follow these simple steps to make your plastering job go smoothly.

Why Room Preparation Matters

Plastering is a messy job. Dust, splashes, and debris are unavoidable, but a little preparation protects your belongings, makes the work faster, and ensures the finished walls look their best.

Here’s how you can help your plasterer get started quickly.

1️⃣ Clear the Room

Remove as much furniture and belongings as possible.

  • Take out sofas, tables, chairs, and smaller items.
  • If large furniture can’t be removed (like wardrobes), move it to the centre of the room and cover it with dust sheets or plastic.

2️⃣ Protect Your Floors

Plaster splashes and dust can stain carpets or scratch floors.

  • Lay down heavy-duty dust sheets or polythene sheets across the entire floor area.
  • If you have carpet, you can also tape the edges of the sheet to skirting boards to stop dust from getting underneath.

3️⃣ Remove Wall Fixtures & Fittings

To achieve an even, professional finish, it’s best if the walls are completely clear.

  • Remove picture frames, shelves, mirrors, and clocks.
  • Unscrew curtain poles, light fittings (if safe to do so), and any wall-mounted brackets.
  • Take off electrical faceplates (switches and sockets) if you’re confident and safe to do so — or your plasterer may handle this.

4️⃣ Check the Walls

Let your plasterer know if:

  • There’s loose plaster already on the walls.
  • There are cracks or damp areas.
  • Any previous plaster has completely fallen off — these areas might need extra preparation or repair.

5️⃣ Provide Easy Access

Your plasterer will need space to mix materials and move tools and ladders around.

  • Clear the hallway and pathways to the room.
  • If possible, keep a nearby water source clear for mixing plaster.

6️⃣ Cover Adjacent Areas

Plaster dust travels!

  • If you’re only plastering one room, hang dust sheets or plastic over doors to adjacent rooms to minimise dust spread.

7️⃣ Inform Your Plasterer of Any Concerns

Before work begins, let your plasterer know if:

  • You want to keep any original features exposed.
  • You have specific areas that need special attention.
  • You’re working to a tight schedule or have access limitations.

Final Thoughts

Preparing your room properly makes a big difference — it protects your home, saves time, and allows your plasterer to deliver a top-quality finish.
